Summers are a sacred time. Growing up, we would pack up the car and head to the lake lot up north. We stayed in campers until our rustic haven, nestled in the heart of nature was built by my father William and with some help from Grandpa Vern. It was here, surrounded by towering trees and the gentle lapping of water against the shore that the best moments were made.
Days at the lake were focused on fishing expeditions, were a small fleet of fishing boats left early A.M. to catch the weekend’s meals. The dads took their families to fishing hot spots while grandpa anchored in his usual spot, Vern’s Island. Evenings brought us together for fish fries, storytelling, cards, music, mischief and campfires. When mosquitos were at bay, we’d gaze at the stars and listen to the crickets while imagining the bears that lurked in the trees.
These moments inspired the creation of Vern’s Island with the intent of bottling the essence of these magical summers and sharing it with you.
